Representations into a reductive subgroup of a reductive group.
Friday 10th March, 12-1pm, Carslaw 175.
Let H be a reductive subgroup of a reductive linear
algebraic group G, and let F be a finitely
generated group. In 1996, Vinberg gave a beautiful proof of a
finiteness theorem, valid over a field of characteristic zero,
relating representations of F in H to
representations of F in G. I will give some
background to this theorem and relate it to a question involving
characters of representations. Then I will describe how I hope to
generalise Vinberg's result to arbitrary characteristic.
