Abstract

Given a dynamical system’s evolution over a finite time duration, one can ask which regions of the phase space of the system are least mixing with the surrounding space. This problem can be posed using either probabilistic or geometric constructions. We describe both of these approaches and the connection between them. Some numerical illustrations and geophysical examples will also be given.
