G.Lusztig constructed a basis of the negative part of a quantized enveloping algebra. This canonical basis has nice properties. Tight monomials are the simplest elements of this basis. I will first describe the notion of tight monomials in the context of quantized enveloping algebras. Then there is a similar situation in the context of perverse sheaves arising from graded Lie algebras that could be seen as a generalization. This will also be considered in the talk.
