SMRI Seminar: ’Symmetry, old and new’ Daryl Cooper (University of California, Santa Barbara) Thursday 22nd February 1:00-2:00pm (AEDT) Law Annex Lecture Theatre 026 & via Zoom (register/join: https://uni-sydney.zoom.us/j/89772007378) Abstract: I will discuss symmetry from a combinatorial perspective. Examples include wallpaper groups, 4-valent graphs, regular languages, molecules, Penrose tilings, and geometric 3-manifolds. It turns out that for each of these classes there is a finite universal geometric object that encodes all the possibilities. ---- Please join us after the seminar for SMRI afternoon tea, 2:00-2:45pm every Thursday on the SMRI Terrace (accessed through A14-04-L4.36) ---- Upcoming SMRI events can be found here: https://mathematical-research-institute.sydney.edu.au/news-events/ SMRI YouTube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/c/SydneyMathematicalResearchInstituteSMRI
