NOTE: This talk was previously advertised for Tuesday 27 November; I moved it to Monday 26 November. Apologies for any inconvenience caused. Title: The rational homology of smooth, real toric varieties Speaker: Alex Suciu, Northeastern University Abstract: I will present a formula for computing the Betti numbers of real toric manifolds, based on a study of cohomology with coefficients in rank one local systems for various polyhedral products, including real Davis-Januszkiewicz spaces and toric complexes. In the case of the Hessenberg varieties, the answer matches a computation previously done by Henderson and Lehrer, using completely different methods.
