A 5+5 year assistant professor position (in all areas of mathematics) at Hokkaido University is being advertised. Please forward this along to anyone who might know someone who could be interested, with my apologies if you receive multiple copies. The official details can be found here.
Application Deadline: June 30, 2024 (23:59 Japan time UTC+9)
Fixed-term: 5 years with possibility of 5 additional years
Language: No knowledge of Japanese is required (all classes and meetings are conducted in English)
Let me give some additional unofficial information (that is, speaking in my personal capacity). While Hokkaido is well-known for its winter sports with very convenient access from Sapporo, it also boasts wonderful outdoor activities all year long due to the surrounding mountains and on the coast. The city itself is on the smaller side with approximately 2.5 million but with many of the conveniences of a larger city with public transportation and a major airport nearby. The city is family/pet friendly with numerous parks, great restaurants (Hokkaido is famous for its seafood and dairy; it also produces many different kinds of vegetables), many special events, and kind people. For the classes, I expect you will have the same group of at most 12 students for the entire year. The salary is sufficient for living comfortably in the middle of Sapporo.
If anyone has questions about what it is like living in Japan/Sapporo or what the position is like, they can contact me (tcscrims@gmail.com) and I will be happy to answer them. For official inquiries regarding the application, see the information in the advertisement.
Thank you,
Travis Scrimshaw
