For this week’s SUMS talk we are lucky to have as speaker Dr Richard Garner from Macquarie University. Pizza and drinks will be available following the talk. Abstract: Nowadays, almost every picture you see or piece of music you hear will, at some point, have passed through a computer. In this talk, I will discuss a seemingly paradoxical fact: that, in turning a sound or image into a digital file, the best possible quality is often obtained by deliberately adding random noise to your signal. I will illustrate this phenomenon by doing awful things to some unsuspecting pieces of music.
