For this week’s SUMS talk, Yinan Zhang is talking about JPEG image compression. (Note the change of room from usual.) Abstract: In this modern age of digital photography, JPEG is one of the most commonly used methods of compressing images. It is capable of achieving high compression with little perceived detriment in image quality, despite being lossy. The compression method uses knowledge about both the physiology of the human eye as well as some mathematics, and we will explore a bit of both in this talk.
