School of Mathematics and Statistics: Prizes and Scholarships 2006 - 2007

The School held its annual Prizes and Scholarships presentation ceremony in the Darlington Centre on the evening of April 30th. The presentations were made by the Chancellor of the University, Justice Kim Santow, and the Dean of the Faculty of Science, Professor David Day. The guest speakers were Dr Paul Scully-Power and Mr Richard Finlay.

Paul Scully-Power, who in 1984 became Australia's first astronaut (on the 13th flight of the Space Shuttle Challenger), is a world expert in remote sensing: visible, infra-red, radar and acoustic. He is Chairman and CEO of SensorConnect Inc.. As well as recounting some interesting stories from his days as a mathematics student at the University of Sydney, Dr Scully-Power emphasized that his education here was an ideal preparation for his later career in the USA. In particular, his training as a mathematician meant that he was well equipped to tackle diverse problems requiring innovation and lateral thinking.

Richard Finlay is a recent graduate of the School, now working for the Reserve Bank. He also stressed the value of mathematical training for problem-solving in the work-place.
