Stratifications of the variety of R-trivial monoids

Abstract

In this paper we consider the variety R of R-trivial monoids. After introducing the notion of a stratification of a variety, we introduce and use the catalan monoid of a directed graph to generate a stratification of R. Other stratifications of R are given and the relationship between them is explored.
